The ‘400 Day Clock’ was a patent invention of an American named Aaron Crane in 1841. Later in 1879, Anton Harder, a clock maker in Germany claimed to have invented the ‘400 Day Clock’. He got the idea of designing such a clock while seeing his servants light rotating chandeliers. In 1901, these clocks were renamed Anniversary Clocks by Ohio-based Bowler and Burdock Company. These time pieces were so named because their torsion pendulum needed winding once a year. Eventually, because of their name, these clocks started being considered as an ideal gift for weddings and anniversaries.
Many different types of anniversary clocks are available in the market today to suit the tastes of different individuals.
Types of Anniversary Clocks
A typical anniversary clock is designed in such a manner that the dial is placed inside a crystal or glass case so that you can see the pendulum and other aspects of the clock. These clocks are grand to look at and exciting to possess. Some of the popular varieties of such clocks are:
- The Ornamental Variety: These are beautiful clocks that are placed either in a gold or silver case. They have some or the other musical element in them and the most common music is the Westminster melody, which can be heard when the pendulum rotates. If you want to choose an anniversary present for your friend or family member, a clock with a crystal pendulum will be an ideal choice. Such clocks will serve as an extremely eye catching show piece, apart from their usual task of showing the time.
- The Panache Effect: Such clocks mostly have a gold-tone metal base, along with a brass finish. They have gained popularity because they have a design in the center on which you can even emboss a picture of the couple. These can be the ideal anniversary present for people who like classy designs.
- The Antique Quality: People who love antique designs are sure to treasure such a clock.
- These anniversary clocks are usually golden in color and placed inside a dome shaped glass case. The dial mostly has roman numerals, with a pendulum hanging from the base of the dial. These are usually replicas of the original 400 Day Clock.
- The Wooden Element: These are the most preferred type of anniversary cloaks these days. If your friend loves to collect wooden objects, make sure to buy them as their present. Such clocks are elegant to look at as they mostly have a solid wooden case, inside which a clock with a metal dial and pendulum is placed. For people who are not too fond of musical clocks, there is an option of controlling the volume levels in these clocks.
Anniversary clocks are extremely delicate and should be handled with care. These are ideal gifts for couples, since they symbolize the value of the time they have spent with each other, going through the ups and downs of their lives together.
